One of the reasons why the Cathedral of Otranto is famous is for its floor. Entirely made in mosaic by the monk Pantaleone between 1163 and 1165, it extends in all three naves of the church and each section has a different meaning. 

Among the many figures in the medieval mosaic, there is also Atlas, the Greek titan who seems to hold a globe, and it is precisely this last element that was used inside the chasuble.


Liturgical set composed by:

  • Celebrant chasubles

Red chasuble in cotton/viscose/lurex fabric. Stolons made with golden embroideries and gold and bronze trimmings woven with manual loom

Inspiration

The project is born from a specific element of the mosaic present on all the floor of the church: the globe of Atlas

Designing

The mosaic was graphically reproduced by computer, after having chosen the fabrics and techniques to be used in the production of the chasuble

Realization

Embroidery in gold tones and braided trimmings using the manual loom.
