intervention of conservationist restoration of a roman chasuble from the late nineteenth century in beige silk satin, with with metal yarn gallon.
The vestment is in a very poor state of conservation. The underlying fabrics are now compromised, silk has lost its chemical and physical characteristics and with it elasticity and compactness. This has caused over time breakages, cuts and consuntions on large areas of the underlying tissue.
The restoration intervention aims to consolidate the degradation and to secure the object.
Restoration phases:
Partial disassembly of packaging, lining and stolons
Suction and elimination of particulate deposits on the front and back of all tissues through an aspiration with micro-aspirator at controlled speed and protective filter nets
Cleaning by neutral ph granular powder, and natural rubber sponges with high absorbent power.
Cold water vapour spray to hydrate fibres
Stopping the gaps by means of silk organzine yarns, and manual packaging of a new lining
